Tags are commonly used to represent items in a facility, for example, equipment, instruments, and pipelines. Sometimes, tags are created for convenience and don’t have a physical representation. For example, an instrument loop tag is a grouping of instruments often used to help a programmer configure a feedback loop within the control system for the facility. Tags often have relationships to other tags (for example, relationship between a pump and its motor), but can also be a representation of a piece of another item. A pipeline is a tag that represents piping from one piece of equipment to another; however, the pipeline is made up of pipe runs. Pipe runs illustrate variations over the span of the line and may include changes in diameter, thickness, insulation etc. While pipe runs may not be apparent in any deliverables, they still form a tag used within the enterprise of SmartPlant applications.
