Understanding Metadata

Metadata
Metadata, also called properties or attributes,  is data that provides information about (describes) an object, or other data.
Any time an object is created in SPF, metadata must be assigned to describe the object.

For example, when you create a document or transmittal in SPF, and you fill out the fields of information that describe the document or transmittal, you are assigning metadata.

Example:  Some of the metadata that describe a Transmittal includes the following:
  • Description
  • Transmittal Type
  • Reason for Issue
  • Target Date

Objects
An object is any item in SPF such as a document, file, tag, transmittal, etc.
Objects can be associated with other objects.  These associations are called relationships.
